In my previous post i have described how to mount Dropbox storage on linux server. And that was actually first step building things up to organize my backups, because that is where my backup files are going to be stored. There I create a separate folder for my website backups. As far as i am running Dropbox with my root user, Dropbox storage is mounted here: “/root/Dropbox/”. So i do the following command to create a folder called “backups” on my Dropbox storage, and it’s child folder “www”, meaning that my website backups are to be stored there.
su # enter your root password mkdir -p /root/Dropbox/backups/www/
“-p” attribute for mkdir means that if parent folder does not exist it will be created automatically without prompting.
Now lets create another folder for my backuping script. Continue reading
How to mount Dropbox on Debian linux server (shell)
Thinking of backuping things on my VPS first of all i thought to mount a share from my home computer. But there are two reason i brought this idea away: thought my PC is almost always on, it still almost. And if one day a want to reinstall my PC for any reason i’d have to configure everything again. Another reason is that it would be a complicated aproach to create a secure connection (using Windows at home, just need it for gaming). So, i decided to look into possibility to backup thing to some kind of cloud storage. Made a comparison of different ones, but most of there need a GUI application to be installed which is not an option for a linux server. Another option was Cyphertite which provides 8GB free and highest security. But this kind security would be too high for me (a key is being used to connect to the storage and if it is lost, service provider has nothing to help you with). Best option for me i found several articles about how to configure it on a pure linux box was Dropbox. So here i’ll tell you how easy it is to make it working and also how to make it run as a daemon. When installing Exchange 2007 Management tools on a 32-bit workstation running Windows 7 you may run into issue when the installation is interrupted followed by error: “The system cannot find the file specified”. Not much information here. But when you go to C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ExchangeSetup.log you may find out that the ldifde.exe is the file is required and cannot be found. Then the following problem is how do i get this file? Continue reading
Just a little bit more that one day has passed since i’ve installed this site and already got two spam comments for the post i wrote today.. well less than an hour ago it was today )
Must be the URL stayed in some spammer’s database from previous reincarnations of this blog. But anyway, spam is what we deal with pretty often in our days and just swearing at it will never make it stop coming. I did try different WP anti-spam plugins in the past and most of them were doing what they have to, but i have a pretty bad memory and i forgot their names. So, i just had to find something again. Maybe here i should drop some words about where this page is hosted…
Normally usual web hosting would be enough. Yes, it may have some limitations like no ssh access (which most ppl wouldn’t even know what does this stay for), it may lack some modules, but anyway usually it would not be a problem for most content management systems ppl are using. But the thing is that first of all i just wanted to have more control over what i’m doing and also i thought that maybe i’ll want to build something else available on internet, besides my web server. It could be communication server for my gaming needs for the cases when raidcall server stops working next time. May want to write some kind of automation scripts for whatever fantasy would go for. So i decided to look for a VPS (Virtual Private Server) solution. Of course, same as most of the inhabitants of the planet Earth i wanted to have more and better for a smaller price. I started googling for different VPS comparisons were published during the last year i have found what i was searching for: Continue reading
So, i just have lost myself in counting how many time did i start my blog, losing all the content i had before… with a purpose or just because i forgot to backup it before it has gone up to the heaven. And i think i have never been upset in loosing it. It was always interesting for me to start the things from the white sheet. If it would just be possible in any field of your life. Start the things you have messed up in your life with new experience and knowledge. It usually becomes pretty boring when it comes to polishing small things though, but… anyway.
So, what the blog is gonna be about? Well just some thought, ideas, experience, event are coming through my life. Something on IT topic, because that’s the field i’m working in and time to time i like to sit and discover something new it this field, something from World of Warcraft gaming (that’s where i usually spend part of my time in evenings after work), some things are happening with me or around me, or just anywhere in the world, but got my attention somehow..
Well, the first post is just bullshit. I just need some content to understand if i am ok with the default WordPress there or should i modify it somehow maybe. Possibly i’ll delete it in some weeks… maybe not. Doesn’t matter. Hopefully newer posts will have more sense then this one i’m writing on friday 30 minutes before my working
day week is over…
